I paint from my heart. Sometimes, an idea comes from seeing something beautiful: others’ artwork, nature, or a new experience when I travel. If I speak with one of my siblings, we might talk about being together as a family and we remember wonderful loving, memories and adventures that our family experienced within Kazakhstan. That love permeates my life, my heart and my art. I connect emotions with color and movement from my hands and paint brush. It brings energy—both positive and joyous and angry and negative. Color is like simple but strong words: you can connect anywhere with just the basics. It is the same with colors. When I am happy, there is joyous, warmth. I mix my colors and find my emotions, and I convey my energy and emotions to the surface of the tile and canvas.

Freedom
With acrylic paint, you must work quickly. That is both fun and challenging. I simplify the emotions and sights that inspire me into simple, abstract shapes and that brings a freedom. Life is very busy and full and using acrylic matches the pace of my life and yet, anything is possible.
I hope people feel my positive emotions and spirit when they see my art. I also want them to have their own fantasy and see their feelings and their life in my art. How does it make them feel: happy, uplifted, I am inspired to bring pieces nature: lava, ocean, fish, mountains, pastures, deserts and stones to my work.

My Family is an Inspiration
My mother was an artist and paid attention to little details. It was Kazakh tradition to use wool in art, because my country grew sheep in the rural part, where I grew up. She created wool paintings; wove rugs and blankets and tapestries on a loom and knitted lace using many materials including silk, wool and cotton. She designed and sewed our clothes and used embroidery on many objects.

Strong Family
I am number nine of ten children, 4 boys and 6 girls. Our family was very strong. The oldest brother took care of youngest sister, and we respected all our siblings. We are an open, happy family of good farm workers taking care of each other. We are a team. Even today, we support and love each other. This is where my deep, loving connection to my family originated. Today, my mother and father live through us and bind us as a family.

Colored Pencils
My oldest brother and sister went to school and used colored pencils. My father gave me a set of 12. I was very young—maybe three years—but I have a vivid memory of the pencils lined up in their case. They smelled of cedar and were so bright. I slept with them! My mother showed me how to use them. We sat down at the table and she showed me how to draw flowers. Now I think of her and I remember sitting and learning and creating with her, as I make my art.
Continuing Growing
The art has continued to grow beyond what my mother taught me, through my work and my daughters’ work. It relaxes me, reminds me of my mother and her love, and allows me to project my energy. When I am very relaxed, I paint in wool creating serene fields of my own mind’s nature. I feel freedom and flexibility to create art here in the US.
